在英超时代，曼联的最终排名从未跌出上半区，更别说接近降级区。曼联与球员签合同时谈的都是进入欧冠的奖金，降入第二级别几乎是不可想象的情景。若无缘欧冠，球员将降薪25%，但是据电讯报了解，曼联在签约或续约时都不会协商降级条款。
这就意味着，即使降级，曼联的薪资支出依旧不变，除非球员被清理出去。根据去年9月披露的财务数据，曼联23/24赛季的工资单为3.647亿镑。
在主场0-2不敌纽卡之后，曼联仅高出降级区7分。赛后阿莫林也承认，曼联为保级而战“是有可能的”。
